WILLISTON — Through a fun-filled afternoon picking sunflowers and enjoying the fall weather, the UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (PIE Center) team learned about the importance of agritourism.

On Oct. 15, PIE Center faculty and staff visited Red, White and Blues Farm, an agritourism operation located in Williston, Florida. The family-owned operation includes 100 acres of u-pick blueberries, peaches, strawberries, sunflowers and zinnias.

Every weekend from late September through October 2021, Red, White and Blues Farm hosted its annual Fall Festival. Visitors could enjoy a variety of attractions including a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, food trucks and live entertainment.

At the Fall Festival, the PIE Center team spent the afternoon walking through the sunflower field, going for a hayride and sampling delicious snacks.

“Our team had a wonderful time visiting Red, White and Blues,” said PIE Center director Ricky Telg. “In addition to participating in the activities, we were able to learn about the different aspects that make up an agritourism operation.”

PIE Center staff met with Jeff Manley, agritourism director of Red, White and Blues Farm. Manley described how agritourism is beneficial for community economies and provides a platform to educate the public about agriculture.

“We will be all doing ourselves a favor the more we can educate the population on where our food comes from,” Manley said.

Manley is featured in the newest Science by the Slice podcast series on agritourism premiering Nov. 24, 2021. To listen to the podcast, visit https://www.piecenter.com/media/podcast.
