The Disaster Response and Recovery Mental Health workshops will provide those in attendance with skills needed to address mental health needs and issues following disasters. The first portion of the training will include Mental Health First Aid training, which is a course developed by the National Council for Behavioral Health. The goal of this course is to provide attendees with an understanding of mental health, and how to support those with mental health challenges. More information about this training can be found at www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org. Mental Health First Aid training will be done by certified trainers through Meridian, which is private, non-profit organization located in North Central Florida whose mission is to promote health, recovery, and well-being of those affected by mental illnesses and substance use disorders through prevention, coordinate treatment, and supportive services. The second portion of training will focus on understanding needs of families and community members during a disaster, and how to best support individuals in the context of a disaster. This training will be conducted by Dr. Angie Lindsey and Dr. Heidi Radunovich, faculty members in the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences. Dr. Lindsey currently serves at the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) point-of-contact for UF/IFAS. Dr. Radunovich is a clinical psychologist with expertise in rural mental health and mental health following disasters.
