GAINESVILLE, FL — A new University of Florida faculty member, who has her academic roots at UF, has joined the Center for Public Issues Education in its efforts to inform the public about major issues facing Florida’s agricultural and natural resources sectors.
Lauri Baker, associate professor of agricultural education and communication, will work closely with other UF faculty affiliated with the UF/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences’ Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (PIE Center). Baker received her master’s degree and doctorate from UF in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
Baker examines new media technologies’ ability to improve lives in rural and agricultural communities.
Baker joins UF and the PIE Center from Kansas State University, where she co-created the Center for Rural Enterprise Engagement (CREE). Baker will integrate her work with CREE by contributing to various PIE Center research and outreach initiatives.
“I look forward to working with an amazing group of collaborators with experience in social science research and sharing that work with the public,” Baker said. “Being a part of the PIE Center and the University of Florida allows me to increase opportunities for rural and agricultural producers to learn and grow while improving their livelihoods.”
Baker has conducted research that focuses on communication preferences and impacts on local economies, new media technologies, strategic communication and audience analysis, Extension communication, and climate change and disaster communication.
